After the celebrated announcement of South Africa’s first black-woman, independently owned animation company, Studio Yezi – the heart-centred studio founded by Thandiwe Mlauli today reveal a first look at the cast of SOLA.  Currently crowdfunding on JumpstarterSOLAis an action-adventure, fantasy and coming-of-age short film and series about the adventures of a girl named Sola who experiences her magic awakening in a world where magic is dangerous and deadly. 

In line with Studio Yezi’s unique business ethos focused on finding and nurturing fresh African talent, the SOLA cast is #OpenUpTheIndustry at play. 

Leading the afro-animé production as SOLA, is no stranger to entertainment; Karabo Ntshweng is a Johannesburg-based radio host who started her career in kids’ television and entertainment. Building loyal audiences on VOW FM947 and now on nationally broadcasted, 5fm, the seasoned media broadcaster makes her film and series debut as she voices the stubborn and passionate SOLA

Introducing Mixo Mathebula and Rifumo Mdaka, the actors who voice twin characters Daniat and Dulani. Viewers may recognise the voice behind Daniat as the soothing and relatable sound of one half of The Sisterhood of the Travelling Mgowo podcast, a consistent feature on the Apple chart of top African podcasts. Mixo is steadily making a name for herself in the new crop of South African content creators with a co-feature on True Love Magazine’s Class of 2020 Women Running Things.

Voicing Daniat’s twin-brother, Dulani is published writer, editor and creator, Rifumo Mdaka – with bylines in OkayAfrica and Bubblegum Club amongst others. Mdaka is an alumnus of the National School of the Arts where he studied theatre where he filled notable roles in Buried Child and Footloose. Described as funny and animated, Dulani is brought to life by Rifumo’s upbeat vocal vibrations. 

Karabo, Rifumo and Mixo will go live with Studio Yezi’s Development Producer, AJ Pitre on Tuesday 18th, Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th August respectively at 7pm to chat about their individual journeys as voice actors and an inside perspective to the making of SOLA thus far. 

Studio Yezi continues to crowdfund (#MakeSOLAHappen) to complete the SOLA short film and series productions and is expected to announce the complete cast by the end of August.
